Chase Charlie Into Spring Race!

Course measured long (3.4mile), and, I probably shouldn't have run as fast as I did (8:35 pace) just 2 days before the mini, but I did and...

8 weeks later...the results are in...

8 weeks ago I posted that I was entering into an intense period of diet and exercise. Tonight was the post testing, and here are the results!!

BEFORE --- AFTER
MARCH 1 --- APRIL 29

Resting Heart Rate
63 bpm --- 64 bpm

Blood Pressure
124 / 80 --- 120/90

Weight
252 --- 231

BMI
32.42 --- 31.39

Body Fat %
21 --- 23

Waist circumference
121cm --- 107cm

Hips circumference
118cm --- 108cm

Sit and reach test
0 --- 0

Curlups test
23 --- 25 (max allowed)

Pushups test
0 --- 6

I'm most proud of my weight loss (home scale shows 228) and losing the inches on my waist and hips. What I can not figure out is how my body fat % went up. I have to assume that it is a somewhat volatile measurement. I was told the margin for error is up to 3.5%, so it may have actually dropped, but the skin fold tests didn't show it.

I know I'm much stronger as 8 weeks ago I couldn't do any real pushups (chest to towel), and now can do 6, and I maxed out the curlup test. Flexibility is still an issue with a zero.

All in all it has been a great experience and the culminating event will be a 5k on Thursday where I will receive some awards for my success!

Finally, I must give my BSU student trainer, Nichole Sleeper, lots of credit. She did an amazing job of pushing me through weight training while allowing me to maintain my running schedule. Now the rest is up to me! Thanks to everyone who has commented on my success. Your comments keep me going, and I'm not done yet!

What have I been weighting for?

3 weeks left until the mini marathon
3 weeks left in the Chase Charlie Y Weight Challenge
So, how's it going? They say a picture is worth a thousand words...so you tell me...

You may recall my post from 7 weeks ago with my weight at 252!? Oh yeah ~ take that 24 pounds!!

So how am I doing it? I have to endorse myfitnesspal.com This website and its mobile app have changed how I think about food and how it relates to my exercise. My personal trainer, has made a very big difference in my overall health too.

The runs are getting faster. Pete and I blitzed a 4 miler this week in nearly 35 minutes, but the long runs are still a struggle. We did 10 miles last weekend at a 10:13 pace. The goal is still 10 minute miles, but even if we don't quite get there, I will not be overly disappointed as I look back to where I was a year ago! Averaging over 25 miles per week right now, and feeling pretty good about it.

Molly has backed off the running, though she still plans to complete the Geist half. I wish I could motivate her to go after it more, but I realize that my goals are not hers, and while running is not her preference, she continues to get stronger everyday as well.

This morning the girls ran a fun run at Morrow's Meadow. Just one lap (0.88 mile) around, but I'm so glad that they have an interest, and that I can help be a positive role model for them now. Carter is enjoying soccer, and he loves to get out and chase the ball at full speed, so hopefully he gets my competitive spirit too.

Next post will likely be after the mini...stay tuned!!

A YEAR LATER...STILL CHANGING!

Some things are noticeably different over the course of a year, while others seem unchanged. How about you? Have you changed much in the last year? Is your health any better? Relationships strengthened? Faith renewed? Or are still waiting to "get around to it"? We are all busy in our own little microcosms of the world, but where are our priorities? I don't proclaim to have all or any of the answers. I believe the only one that can determine that for you...is you! But if you've followed my story over the last year, perhaps I at least got you thinking a little? Or, maybe you're still laughing at me.

EITHER WAY...IT'S TIME TO CHANGE!

You can look at my post from exactly one year ago, when I profoundly stated (at nearly 300 pounds) that I was going to change my life when I changed my clocks.

We all have to change our clocks tonight, and what better time to change your life. I challenge you. I dare you. Make a change. It doesn't have to be the crazy marathon goal that I had. It could be your first 5k. It could be your commitment to attend church regularly. It could be your decision to leave that lame job behind and seek a new adventure (http://careers.edwardjones.com). There are no bad ideas when we're talking about personal change. Inspire yourself first, and you can inspire others! I believe in you! If this fat kid can do it, so can you!

I ADVISE U TO MAKE A CHANGE!

Y Weight?

That was the question, and I didn't have an answer...

I got an email on Feb 24 stating that if I signed up for the Y weight challenge, I could get 50% off. The original cost for a couple was $300, and we could get it for half that. We also had some Y bucks saved, so were getting an AMAZING deal. No excuses!

So what do we get for that price? Well, I'm honestly not exactly sure, but here is what I do know...

YMCA partnered with BSU exercise science and sports administration classes to create the Chase Charlie into Shape program. I have been assigned two BSU students to work with. One of them will be my Personal trainer for 16 sessions over the next 10 weeks. I will attend group exercise classes, with BSU students, and YMCA instructors. I will attend nutrition education classes. And I will be monitored regularly on a weekly basis. This is not a competition against others, but rather against ourselves. We will be rewarded points based on our activities, and those points can translate into prizes.

We started last night with some introductions of the class, but tonight we did our pretesting.
It was very extensive. Here is what I learned.
Resting Heart Rate - 63 bpm
Blood Pressure 124 / 80
Weight 252 (up 12 since the full marathon)
Total Cholesterol 155 (yes, they took my blood)
BMI 32.42
21% Body Fat (after many skin fold tests)
They also measured waist and hips, but I don't remember those numbers.
They tested flexibility with a sit and reach test that I measured zero on (better than negative)
Curlups test was a little different, but 23 of a maximum 25
Pushups test required a specific form including chest to towel and back up, and therefore I did ZERO!
I have communicated my desire to stick with my running schedule and the need to focus on strength training and flexibility, and my trainer has agreed to help me with these areas. My trainer will build a workout plan for me each week that their professor must sign off on.
I'm very excited. I have never had a personal trainer before. Molly is on board as well.
The 10 weeks ends the week of the mini marathon, so this will be the biggest push I've ever made to improve my overall physical fitness.

I ADVISE U TO PUSH WITH ME OVER THE NEXT 10 WEEKS.....Y WEIGHT?

Let the training begin...

Ready, set, GO! It's time to get serious!

January was a difficult month for running. Lots of time on the treadmill, and only mustered about 50 miles for the month, but added in LOTS of stairs. Pete and I tackled the Bop to the Top in support of Riley's Hospital and an old church camp friend, Mark Simmonds, who lost a child just 2 months into life. It was great to catch up with him and tackle a new event at the same time.

February means, time for Mini Marathon training to begin. This is week 1 of a 12 week program. I've added about 10 pounds since the Monumental 3 months ago, but I'm okay with that, I know it will come off with the upcoming runs. Excited to be in my routine again, and anxious to see how long I can stay perfect with my run assignments!

Stay tuned...
